The New Jersey Nets were a pretty poor squad last year versus the NBA sports books odds but with a new owner, lots of salary cap space and a new head coach, the Nets might be improved in 2010 in NBA betting.
It may take time for them to make huge improvements versus the basketball sportsbook online odds since the Nets have not been able to make a big free agent splash.
The Nets did sign forward Travis Outlaw to a five-year, $35 million deal but he is not thought to be a premier player. He averaged 8.7 points and 3.6 rebounds in 23 matches for the Los Angeles Clippers last year after coming over from Portland. He has averaged 9.5 points and 3.4 rebounds in seven seasons and is a great complementary player but not a star.
Do not discount Outlaw yet, though. The key reason, he has said, that he decided to join the Nets was simple: They had no small forward, and they were willing to take an opportunity on him. He’s been a constant 6th man for most of his career, earning him the nickname “Mr Fourth Quarter” for his late game heroics. But now head coach Avery Johnson has promised him more than that. Look for a enthusiastic Outlaw to be given the opportunity to demonstrate himself as a quality player in the upcoming season.
Mikhail Prokhorov, who’s willing to spend money, is the Nets’ new owner, but every one of the big name free agents decided against going to New Jersey. The Nets still have lots of salary cap room so they may add other players before next season but head coach Avery Johnson will most likely have to wait another year for huge aid. New Jersey is looking at adding either Tyrus Thomas or Luis Scola but both of those players are below the elite level.
Free agents like LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade, Amare Stoudemire, Carlos Boozer and Rudy Gay avoided the Nets, although New Jersey has lots of money to spend. It also looks as though New York’s David Lee has little interest in the Nets. LeBron James in particular made it apparent he was looking for a squad with a winning track record, one who would give him a championship before the end of his career. And he apparently did not feel as though the Nets would provide that.
The Nets might look to free up much more cap room for 2001 or 2012 since they were spurned by leading free agents this time around. The Nets are talking about deals with Indiana and Portland for Danny Granger and LaMarcus Aldridge. The Nets might get rid of their contracts after this season to free up money if they got those 2 players to help them this season.
Last year, New Jersey was a straight up 12-70. They were not that much better against the spread as they went 33-48-1. Since they did not make a big free agent splash, they probably won’t be improved enough to make the playoffs, though the Nets will be improved this season.
